Clothes Shopping

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I bought myself a new jacket yesterday, that’s it on the left.  I picked it up from the Red Herring section of Debenhams for the tidy sum of £48.

It’s got to the point now where I need to go out and buy some new clothes.  I’ve lost 9kg which means I’ve lost 10 litres of volume and that my clothes have started to look a little big for me.

Most people who know me know I don’t particularly like going clothes shopping.  Every now and then I get an urge bbut mostly I don’t fancy it.  It stems from the fact that the majority of the time you don’t get a choice in what you wear when you’re over weight.  Shooping for me became an exercise in walking into the shop, looking for the largest size, seeing they were too small and leaving.  Not really a fun shopping experience.

I’m a bit more heartened these days though.  When I went shopping yesterday I ended up buying an XL.  There was an XXL on the rack but I left it there.  I think it’s one of the very few occasions where I haven’t bought the largest size there.  It’s also quite heartening that I’m not slipping down into the realms of most clothes shop sizes.  It doesn’t mean I’m going to shop there though.

I’ve decided that in the main I’m going to stick with those clothes shops that have stuck with me over the years.  That means places like Debenhams, Burtons, M&S and a whole bunch of smaller shops will be getting my money.  Places like TopMan (or TopBoy as I call it) shouldn’t count on getting my cash.  There will be exceptions though.  Part of the reason I’m losing weight is to get some nicer clothes so when it comes to some stuff I won’t mind buying it from stores that don’t support fat people.

This need to buy some new clothes has timed itself nicely.  I’ve just handed in my notice at my current employer and will be heading to a new job mid-April.  It’s about time I took a bit more care in my appearance!

Hmmm, I must not be able to measure

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Well I got home and grabbed the tape measure.  Since my trousers are pretty much nearly falling off I was pretty keen to see if I’d dropped inches as well as punds.

All I can say is that I must be crap at measuring things.  It appears that the only things that have changed are my chest and my thighs.  I’ve lost 2 inches off my chest and gained 2 inches on each thigh.  I don’t think that’s right somehow!?!

So I’ve either measured wrong the first or second time.  I’m not going to worry about it just yet.  I think I’ll wait until my next months goal and then try again.

Hmmm, bit disappointing though.

My clothes have started to drop off.

Well it’s official, my clothes are too big for me.  Slowly my trousers are getting looser and looser.  It’s both a great feeling and a terrible one.  I’m not a big fan of clothes shopping so the thought of having to go out and get more doesn’t really appeal to me.

Anyway, I’ve now started to get to the point where people are noticing that I’m losing weight.  I’ve had a few comments and obviously I’m starting to feel it in the fit of my clothes.  So it got me thinking about putting this weight into context.  Now that I’m lighter by 6kg how different is it?

Well, one way of putting it is in water.  Go out and buy 3, 2 litre bottles of water and carry them home.  Those 3 bottles of water weigh the same amount as the amount of fat I’ve lost.  Also, if you get another litre to make it to 7 litres, that’s roughly how much volume my body has been reduced by.  (Human body fat has a density of about 900kg/cubic meter.)

I find it quite cool to think of it like that.  If I had to walk around with 3 bottles of water for the entirety of my life I wouldn’t be that happy.  But that’s what I’ve been doing.

By the time I finish my bout of weight-loss and get to 100kg I will have lost 15kg.  That’s the equivalent of 7 and a half 2 litre bottles of water or 3 of those big 5L bottles.  Not only that but my body volume would’ve gone down by 17 litres.

So tonight, when I get back from work and the gym I’m going to grab a tape measure and see how I’m progressing with my measurements.  It’ll be interesting to see how they’ve changed.

Sid.
